Gospel Reading: John 11: 1 - 45
There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will end not in death but in God’s glory, and through it the Son of God will be glorified.’
Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that Lazarus was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?’
Jesus replied:
‘Are there not twelve hours in the day?
A man can walk in the daytime without stumbling
because he has the light of this world to see by;
but if he walks at night he stumbles,
because there is no light to guide him.’
He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is resting, I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is able to rest he is sure to get better.’ The phrase Jesus used referred to the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’, so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us go too, and die with him.’ On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’
Jesus said:
‘I am the resurrection and the life.
If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live,
and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?’
‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’
When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house sympathising with Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who followed her, Jesus said in great distress, with a sigh that came straight from the heart, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man, could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Still sighing, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone.
Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said:
‘Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer.
I knew indeed that you always hear me,
but I speak for the sake of all these who stand round me,
so that they may believe it was you who sent me.’
When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’ The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with bands of stuff and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’
Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.
School Fete
Thank you to everyone who attended our recent school fete! It was a great success and we couldn't have done it without the support of our amazing school community, led by our awesome Fete committee. It has been over 1000 days since our last fete and it was wonderful to be able to gather as a community. We hope that you enjoyed the food, games, and activities that were on offer, and that you had a chance to connect with fellow parents, teachers, and students. We also want to extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to plan, set up, and run the fete - your hard work and dedication made it a truly memorable event. Below are some images of our school captains Kissing the Croc. I managed to dodge the goat for another 12 months.
Medical Leave
I will be away from Tuesday March 28 until Monday April 3. Over the past six months I have had 2 melanomas removed, one from my leg and the other from my back. Last week I had a biopsy on my right arm, which has also been identified as a melanoma. As such, I will be having it removed next week. In my absence, Kerrin Henderson will be available. I have read a great deal about skin cancer in the past 6 months and there are often diverse opinions in how much sun exposure we should or shouldn’t have.
Preventing Skin Cancer
To minimise you and your family's risk of skin damage including skin cancer adopt a combination of the 5 sun protection measures when spending time outdoors when UV levels reach 3 and above. In Canberra this will be for part or most of each day from around August through to the end of May. Canberrans are encouraged to download the SunSmart app to assist them with daily sun protection times.
Around June and July sun protection is generally not necessary in Canberra due to low UV levels (under 3). Sun protection in June and July may still be required for people who have a history of skin cancer or are spending extended time in the sun i.e. outdoor workers. For more information read Cancer Council Australia’s Position Statement Risks and Benefits of Sun Exposure.

Parish Feast Day
On Friday we will celebrate our Parish feast day, the Feast of the Annunciation. We will travel to and from by bus, celebrate Mass at 10.30 and enjoy a picnic together and some activities. Students need to pack a picnic lunch.
Caritas Rice Day
A reminder that on Tuesday 28 March we will have a special lunch where students will be given a bowl of rice. The rice will be cooked at school in our canteen and the students will eat together. If you are able to assist in cooking rice in the canteen for an hour or so on Tuesday, or you have a rice cooker that we could use (we only have 3 at the moment!) please let us know by contacting Nicole Gibson, nicole.gibson@cg.catholic.edu.au.
The success of the day and the understanding your children gain from it will depend largely on your support. Please provide a bowl and cutlery for your child to use on the day. We ask you to consider not sending in extra food on the day so the children can truly experience what it means to live in poverty.
We are aware and mindful that some children have allergies and special dietary requirements and ask you to liaise with your child’s teacher as to what might work best for them

ELC NEWS
Happy Birthday to Jesse N, Henry C
A big thank you to everyone who was able to support our St Jude’s School fete on the weekend. It was a fantastic community day and we hope you had a great time. This week we had a wonderful celebration of Harmony Day with children wearing traditional dress to represent their cultural background, or wearing orange for Harmony. We were also very excited to have a visit from Peter from Canberra Reptile Zoo with his reptile friends including a tree frog, turtles, a crocodile, lizards and snakes. Would you hold a python like Mr Luc?

Throughout Lent we are learning about the importance of doing kind things for others. We are participating in Project Compassion to help people living in poverty. Children can bring in gold coin donations to contribute to their class Project Compassion box.
Gastroenteritis
Our Gastro outbreak is now declared over. As always, please continue to keep children at home if they are unwell and advise the ELC office of symptoms.

This week celebrates Harmony Week with Harmony Day on Tuesday 21 March. Traditionally, orange is the colour associated with Harmony Day. It signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
A couple of great books to read to children that promote Harmony:

A massive congratulations and thanks to everyone that contributed to the successful running of the school fete. It was an absolutely amazing day! It was fantastic to see school and community members once again come together. It would not have been possible without the help of so many people. From volunteers on the day, donation makers, bakers, sponsors and organisers, thank you!
I have to single out Carlie Douglas and Emily Eyles. They worked so hard for months to make this fete happen, along with the fete committee. I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved rest on Sunday.
The next Community Council meeting will be held at 6pm on Wednesday 29 March in the library. We would love to see as many people as possible attend. The meeting is open to all parents and carers. An online option will also be available for this meeting.
Many thanks
