Dear Parents and Carers
The installation of our two new classroom building is proceeding well. It is expected that the construction company will hand over the building to the site manager next Monday. After this, the landscaping, plumbing and some electrical/data cabling work remains before the building is complete. It is pleasant to ponder the possibility that we will have this additional space to use for the last few weeks of this year, before being fully occupied next year. I am pleased with the ‘look’ of the building and can see that with appropriate landscaping it will enhance our school site. It is unfortunate that we lose some open place space but that is the price St Jude’s has to pay when we are a growing school.
A warm day is expected for tomorrow as our children head off around 9.30am for our annual walkathon. All funds raised will go to the Community Council who in turn use this money to pay for improved facilities for the children. To give an example, the CC paid for the new playground this time last year. They have recently put air conditioning in all classrooms, as well as the display cables in all classrooms. I want to thank Mr Fulton and Mrs Rebecca Hunter as the CC representative for the planning of this walkathon. I would like to thank Mrs Susan Rowell for processing all funds raised from the walkathon. I am sure it will be a fabulous day. Thank you to all our helpers.
Executive Teacher – Coordinator
Due to our school growing we have been granted an additional coordinator. This new position has been advertised and interviews will be held next week. This position is an important one as the successful applicant will be a member of the school executive and has input into the planning and good operation of the school.
No Assembly this Friday Afternoon
Due to the walkathon and the students being out of class all morning, this week’s Friday afternoon assembly has been cancelled.
St Jude’s Feast Day/Grandparents Day/Learning Journeys and Open Classrooms
On Monday 28 October, our school will celebrate our feast day. This day will start with Mass and then will be followed by learning journeys in our Kinder to Year 2 classes and open classrooms in Years 3 to 6. We will take this opportunity to open all our classes to parents and grandparents. A special morning tea will follow this, for our grandparents and parents. I hope to see you here!
Everyone was saddened at the passing of Pat Maher (Cooper 6S and Bailey 4LR) after a long illness recently. We pray for his family and hope they are comforted in the knowledge that the school community has fond memories of Pat.
Please keep Miss Lauren Jameson (2J) and her family in your prayers as her grandfather has recently passed away. May God grant Miss Jameson's grandfather eternal rest.
As of Monday 28 October (week 3), students are required to be in full summer uniform and need to wear their school hats at lunchtime and recess.
School photo day for Kindy to Year 6 is on Thursday 31 October. Children are required to be in full summer uniform. Photo forms have been sent home with students. If you haven't received a photo form or if you require a sibling photo form, please collect one from the front office. Please ensure you bring in your photo form on photo day.
For primary school children who have siblings in the Stingrays class at the ELC, the sibling photos will be taken on Tuesday 29 October at the ELC. Siblings in the primary school will be taken to the ELC when required for the photos.
St Jude's Annual Walkathon is on Friday 25 October at 9.30am. Permission notes for students to take part in the walkathon, were due by Friday 18 October. Sponsorship forms and donations can be returned to school by Friday 15 November.
ASIC recently announced that it is seeking the public’s views of school banking programs to help inform its review. ASIC would like to hear from any parents. You can do this by going online by answering ASIC’s short survey and providing any other feedback. Visit consultation.asic.gov.au/financial-capability/review-school-banking-programs/
Whole School Mass
Next Monday the whole school will come together to celebrate our feast day, the Feast of St Jude. St Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St James the Less, and a relative of Our Saviour. He was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus and his attribute is a club. Images of St Jude often include a flame around his head, which represent his presence at Pentecost, when he accepted the Holy Spirit alongside the other apostles. Another attribute is St Jude holding an image of Christ, in the Image of Edessa. Sometimes he can also be seen holding a carpenter's ruler or is depicted with a scroll or book, the Epistle of Jude.
Biblical scholars agree St Jude was a son of Clopas and his mother Mary was the Virgin Mary's cousin. Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem.

Last Day of Term
The last day of term 4 is Thursday 19 December. We are seeking expressions of interest to see if ELC families would utilise a holiday care day on Friday 20 December. If there is enough interest, the ELC will run a program on Friday 20 December from 8am to 5:30pm. Please email the ELC by tomorrow, Friday 25 October, if you would prefer the centre to remain open on that day.
ELC Tea towels
Misprinted tea towels (with the primary school logo rather than the ELC logo) are available from the ELC for $5 each. These will make a great gift for Christmas!
The Turtle and Lobster classes will join in the St Jude’s Walkathon tomorrow, Friday 25 October. The Stingrays will hold their own Walkathon next Wednesday 30 October. Parents and friends are welcome to join us. Please contact your teacher if you are available to assist on the day.
St Jude’s Feast Day, Learning Journeys and Grandparents Day
Next Monday we will celebrate St Jude’s Feast Day. We will join the school for Mass at 9:30am and parents and grandparents are invited to join us. We will then return to the ELC for morning tea and to showcase our learning this year.
ELC photos will be held next Tuesday 29 October for Stingrays and Turtles, and Friday 1November for Lobsters. If you would like sibling photos to be taken, please see the office for an order form. Sibling photos for Turtles and Lobsters will be held on Thursday 31 October at the primary school. For the Stringrays, sibling photos will take place on Tuesday 29 October at the ELC.
St Jude’s Orientation Day
The ELC and the primary school will be holding Orientation Day for 2020 ELC and Kinder children respectively on Wednesday 13 November. Please note that parents/guardians are responsible for taking and collecting children. ELC children not attending St Jude’s in 2020 should come to the ELC as normal. This will be a uniform free day for all ELC children.
The St John Vianney’s Fete is on Saturday 2 November. It is always a great family and community day. If you would like to order a Fete Hand or Ride Pass contact email@example.com.
The ELC is again holding a mango fundraising drive. Trays of 14-21 Kensington Pride mangoes from North Queensland will be available for $27 and will be delivered to the ELC around 2-6 December. Orders are due by next Tuesday 29 October. More information and order forms are available on the St Jude’s website. St Jude’s and SJV families and friends are welcome to take part.

Catholic Schools Netball
The very last Catholic Schools Netball Carnival was a huge success and enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all participants and our volunteers, including coaches, umpires and managers. Thank you to all those who gave up their Saturday to assist the carnival for all our St Jude’s students.
Fitness for term 4 will be school fitness runs on Wednesday and Friday mornings, rather than our house fitness. We are really enjoying the enthusiasm of the students (and the encouragement from parents) who are determined to better their placings each Wednesday and Friday. If your child is unable to participate for a particular reason, could you please send a note in with them to explain the situation.
Clinics in Term 4
All students at St Jude’s will be participating in tennis and swimming clinics in term 4. Students in Year 4 to Year 6 will be meeting Joe at the Weston tennis courts near McDonalds on Fridays and Joe will meet our Kindy to Year 3 students on our netball courts, here at school.
If you are looking for a summer sport or opportunity for your child to get involved in, here are some suggestions -
Little T's Triathlon Program - for kids 7-14 years
If your child loves to swim, ride their bike and run then Little T’s Triathlon may be for them. The Little T's Triathlon program gives kids the opportunity to participate in swimming, cycling and running in a fun and safe environment. Swim sessions (Saturday) are operated out of Canberra's Olympic Pool in the City so a central location for all. The bike and run sessions (Sunday) are held at either the city pool or at Dairy Road, Fyshwick away from any traffic.
The kids are provided with swim technique coaching and also other fun swimming activities related to triathlon. The kids will also participate in aquathons (swim/run) so plenty of practice learning transitions. They will enjoy riding their bike over a bike skills course, honing their bike skills while also practising their bike to run transitions. Learning critical bike riding signalling while riding on bike paths and/or roads in the future. The kids will do plenty of running and combine both the bike and run in a fun race at the end of sessions. When at the City pool once a month on a Sunday the kids will get to participate in a proper triathlon event. Fun Fun Fun.
The program is developed and implemented by Coach Corey Bacon who has been involved in triathlon for over 20 years. He has been actively involved in local triathlon clubs and more heavily involved in developing junior triathlon in Canberra and surrounding regions for over 10 years.

Just a reminder that Uniform Shop orders can be placed electronically via Qkr! and items will then be delivered directly to your child, for them to take home. Pending the availability of our volunteers, Qkr! orders are usually filled on Wednesday mornings, as well as Friday afternoons when the shop is open.
Our prices are very competitive and most importantly, all profits from the Uniform Shop go to the St Jude’s Community Council and help fund school projects, such as the new playground equipment built in 2018.
If you have any questions, please direct them to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Finally, if anyone is able to assist at the Uniform Shop on a Friday afternoon from 3.00-3.30pm, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Community Council Freezer
In our community we have families who are doing it tough for many different reasons. If you’re in a position to help, we would love some home made or purchased meals to fill our little freezer.
Walkathon sausage sizzle
Volunteers are needed on Friday 25 October. Please consider putting your name down to help on the day.
Mulleygrubs Masterchef needed
Only 8 families needed to end the year. Time goes way too quick! Please email the canteen or contact me if you are interested.
Please remember to add a 10c payment for a bag on Qkr!
Frozen Watermelon slices are now available
Consistent Qkr! Problems
Please ensure online lunch orders are for the correct day and that you get a receipt number. Too many children are turning up at lunch upset that their lunch orders are missing. Some parents also haven’t updated their children’s classes. This delays the tallying process in the morning, especially on Fridays when we are very busy. Please don’t hesitate to pop into the canteen if you need a run through on how to order.
$1.00 lolly limit per day
Our local Bakers Delight in Cooleman Court rewards our school when we purchase bread from them. When making purchases at Bakers Delight, could you please ask for the points to be added to St Jude’s Primary? Over time, the points add up and we benefit from this by receiving free or discounted bread for our carnivals. Let your friends and family know! The more people who support this, the more points we receive.
Mulleygrubs Café can only function with your help. Any amount of time is wonderful. Thursdays and Fridays are especially busy so if you can, please come in and have a go. I’ll even make you a cuppa! Remember to apply for a Working with Vulnerable People card (WWVP). It’s free for volunteers!
Hot Coffee is available at the Canteen!
...and is now on Qkr! Only available to be picked up from 8.15am (the coffee machine needs to warm up). You can create your own profile on Qkr! or use your child’s profile.
Coffee, hot chocolate, tea and chai lattes are available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.15am through to 1.45pm. Pop in for a chat and purchase a roady!
