Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:22-33
After he had fed the people, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the crowd away.
And having sent the people away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. At nightfall, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it.
At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage! Don't be afraid. It's me!" Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water."
Jesus said to him, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. But, in face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?"
As they got into the boat, the wind dropped. Then those in the boat bowed down before Jesus saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God!"
MND and Cancer Fundraiser
As you would be aware, we have 5 Peer Leader groups in Year 6. They present ideas and as a school, we often implement them. One of their latest ideas has a fundraising focus. This Friday we will be holding a fundraiser focussing on both Motor Neuron Disease and Cancer. The Community Council will sponsor a sausage Sizzle and students are invited to wear a colour linked with one of these illness. We have had several families impacted by MND and Cancer in the past 12 months so they are very close to our hearts. You may have lost a loved one or have a survival story which is close to your heart. We are asking that each family donate what they can afford. We understand that many families are experiencing financial challenges. We will divide the funds equally between MND and Breast Cancer.
Ongoing works
The project for the portable classrooms included a covered walk way. This will enable students to get from the classroom to the toilets and areas within the main building during wet weather. CE are currently organising timings for this project.
We have received quotes for asphalt repair, which will hopefully be completed during the September holiday period. We are awaiting final quotes for the undercover shelter shed and are hoping that this work will also begin in the holidays.
Parent / Teacher Meetings
During Term 3, there are no formal meetings scheduled. However, as is always the case, if you need to meet with your child’s teacher for an update or because of an ongoing concern, please contact them via email to set up a mutually suitable time.
Community Council Meeting
We have a scheduled Community Council meeting next week. The Community Council executive met last night and we will circulate a draft agenda early next week. If you have any questions or ideas you would like to bring to the table, please either come to the meeting, or reach out via the Community Council email address which can be found on the school website. Feast of the Assumption
The Feast of the Assumption celebrates Mary returning to heaven, both in body and soul. Mary’s assumption signifies God’s promise of eternal life and the resurrection of the faithful. It is one of the eight days of obligation in the Church calendar calling all Christians to celebrate God’s promise, and is celebrated in many different ways around the world.
On Tuesday 15 we will celebrate the Feast of the Assumption with Mass in the Church at 12pm. Parents and families are invited to attend.

ELC NEWS
We have had a wonderful morning with our SJV buddies. It is lovely to see the connections both the Year 5 and ELC children are making. It is very important and assists greatly in the transition to Kindergarten.
Fundraising Day Tomorrow
This Friday 11 August, the St Jude's community is coming together to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neuron Disease and Cancer. We have families in our school who have been heavily impacted by these diseases. Children are invited to come to school dressed in any colour that aligns with Motor Neuron Disease (blue) or any cancer (eg pink, orange, yellow, white). The Community Council will be sponsoring a sausage size. We suggest that you also pack lunch for your child. We ask that each family consider brining in a donation to support these important causes.
Mura Gadi Monday
We have had a lovely week of weather to enjoy our Mura Gadi program. Next week we will trial having Mura Gadi on a Monday and Friday so please pack your child’s gum boots on these days.
Hats
Now that we’re getting closer to Spring, please ensure that your child has a labelled hat in their bag. We monitor the UV rating closely and when UV is 3 or more we must wear hats as part of our sun protection policy.
Book Week
The Lobsters will participate in a book week parade on Friday Week 6. The Turtle and Stingray classes will participate in the book week parade on Wednesday Week 7 with the primary school.

Winter Walk to School Day - 11 August 2023
Tomorrow is our Winter Walk to School Day. It is an initiative supported by the government to encourage both students and their parents to be more active and healthy in their daily commute to school and work.
St Jude’s will be participating with a whole school walk and ride to school morning. We will have teachers stationed from 8:10am at the locations marked on the map. They will wait and meet students and parents and depart those locations by 8:20am to walk and ride along the marked routes to school.
At school, the groups will be met with some great tunes pumping, a fruit station and a raffle ticket to go in the draw for some prizes at the end of the day.
It’s going to be a great morning and we look forward to seeing as many people as possible getting involved in the action.
South Weston Athletics Carnival
The South Weston Athletics Carnival will be held next Thursday 17 August at Woden Park, Phillip. Students who have qualified to represent St Jude's at this carnival have received a note, containing the details of the carnival as well as a permission note which needs to be returned to the school office with $10 payment. If notes are not returned by tomorrow, Friday 11 August. Parents will need to provide transport for their child to and from Woden Park. Parents are very welcome to come along on the day and watch, but must not enter the track or field event arenas at any stage during the day. Mrs Henderson will be the St Jude's teacher present at the carnival. Please let me know if your child will not be participating.
Futsal School Cup
In my absence last week, I wanted to acknowledge the wonderful parental support from Ron N and Luke P for coaching the St Jude's School Cup Futsal teams last Tuesday. Your support is very much appreciated. The teams had a fantastic day winning many games and scoring lots of goals. Our girls team came away winners on the day. Our boys team was not too far behind. Go St Jude's! Thanks also to parents for transporting your child 'across town' for the early start.
Touch Football Gala Day
ACT Touch are running a Touch Football Gala Day for Year 5/6 students on Monday 28 August at Deakin Ovals. Notes or COMPASS notification will be coming home Monday for any interested students. There is no limit on team numbers from each school for this event. It is a gala day with emphasis on fun and trying a new sport rather than competition. Teams will be made on this premise. It is open to girls and boys. I am keeping my eyes open for a similiar event for Year 3 and 4.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics lessons have commenced for all classes, with the students enjoying the activities and the challenges they bring. Please make sure your child is in sports uniform on their gymnastics day to enable them to participate comfortably.
